President 2012 (Romney/Obama): 34% to 65%
Little River Turnpike was the first toll road in America, established before the Revolutionary War and running from Duke Street in Alexandria out to Loudoun County. Today, Little River Turnpike is a highly developed drag where it’s common to see Hispanic immigrants waiting for work outside the Home Depot. Eastern Annandale and Lake Barcroft were mostly developed in the booming post-War period, and many communities around the lake still have a feel of suburban, middle-class white neighborhoods. The communities around Seven Corners and Little River Turnpike, however, are changing rapidly as Hispanic immigrants move in. Asian-Americans have also historically been predominant in the area. Annandale’s Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, the magnet school repeatedly ranked as the best high school in America by U.S. News and World Report, is now majority Asian. Whites account for about half of voters, while the Hispanic population has boomed to about one-third, and Asians have remained steady at about one-fifth. The district’s diversity gives it a solid Democratic tilt.
